Frankie’s birth story

My life officially changed on December 29th, 2015 when my beautiful baby boy, Frank Hickman IV was born.

I woke up on the 28th around 3am and started feeling contractions, but was not sure if they were the real deal. I paid attention to their frequency and timing for the next 45 minutes and then woke up my husband. I said, “Babe, I think I’m having real contractions.” We called and were told to head over to the hospital and arrived just after 6am. I was feeling nervous and excited and wondering what the next few hours would be like.

They admitted me after checking that I was 3-4cm dilated and then moved me to a Labor & Delivery room. One of my 2 nurses was one of the awesome nurses I had had while I was there hospitalized for pyelonephritis back in August. She got me a room with a tub, which I ended up using for about 20 minutes before I couldn’t take the pain anymore and asked for an epidural. My water ended up breaking not too long after they admitted me actually, so I was glad they didn’t send me home to wait it out more.

To make a long story a bit shorter, I got some Pitocin to help me dilate more. I also ended having a fever due to my prolonged labor. My OB had me start pushing at around 6pm for 30 minutes but we made no progress. Three hours later we tried again for 1 1/2 hours and it was then that she determined my pelvis was just way too narrow for the baby. My husband is truly my hero for being there, holding my hand, offering a touch or massage when he felt I needed it. He was awesome and made a tough experience much easier to deal with.

So I ended up having a C-section just past midnight. I had mentally prepared myself for the possibility of it since I am very small, but it was still a little scary. Seeing my baby for the first time though, I forgot everything that had happened. They have the 3 of us a few minutes to bond as a family and then whisked him off to give him an IV of antibiotics since I’ve had a fever. We both were fine. He’s been such a sweet little baby. There’s so much more I can write right now but where would I stop?

I look at my son and I’m amazed at the little miracle that he is. He makes me believe even more in God. I feel love and peace within me because of Frankie 😊

Thanks for reading! I’m taking some time to rest my body so workout posts may take a while…
